Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen has agreed a contract extension after Newcastle United attempted to sign him in the summer transfer window.

The Norway international will sign a deal until 2030, including the option for an additional year, to end speculation over his future at Molineux.

The agreement comes just three months after Strand Larsen joined Wanderers on a permanent basis, moving from Celta Vigo for £23 million following a successful loan stint last season.

Wolves rejected two bids of £50m and £55m from the Magpies for the centre-forward, who scored 14 goals to help the club avoid relegation last term. Newcastle went on to sign Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade instead.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Leeds United, manager Vitor Pereira said the deal is a necessary step for Wolves to continue progressing in the Premier League.

“Very important, very important if we want to increase our level, if we want to give another step up. To be another level we need this kind of player. Not only tactical and technical but his spirit and personality. It’s very important for us and it’s very good news.”

Strand Larsen has missed Wolves last two fixtures with an Achilles injury, but Pereira is hopeful he will be fit to play this weekend after making a return to squad training this week.

“He was training with the team yesterday and I hope tomorrow he can help up us, obviously not for 90 minutes. This is the information I have been given by the medical team.”

Pereira himself signed on new terms this week amid uncertainty over his job security. Wolves sit at the foot of the table with four defeats from four games so far this season, but the club have backed him to turn things around.

“The timing was the fact that we need to move forward because we trust each other and they believe in our work and I believe in the project at the club.

“Of course [it felt good to get reassurance] but football is not about reassurance it’s about trust, hard work day-by-day and about character and commitment. If you are here and see the work everyday then you can value the work of someone.”
