Wolves ended the season with a 1-1 draw at fellow relegated Burnley, a result that left them bottom of the Premier League. ExpressAndStar.com highlights five talking points from the finale.
Wolves started brightly. Ladislav Krejci’s header struck Florentino on the arm and the referee gave a penalty, which Adam Armstrong converted.
In the 75th minute at Turf Moor, academy product Jerome Abbey came on to make his first senior appearance, becoming Wolves’ youngest-ever Premier League player at 16 years, eight months and eight days.
Wolves finished the campaign without an away league win, one of only two clubs across Europe’s top five leagues to do so, alongside Pisa in Serie A. They are the seventh team to complete a Premier League season without an away victory, the first since Hull City in 2009/10.
A win would have lifted them off the bottom, but they have been there since late August and end the year in last place. This was only the second final-day Premier League fixture between two already relegated teams.
Joao Gomes was omitted from the squad ahead of an expected summer move. The Brazilian is likely to join Atletico Madrid when the transfer window opens, with negotiations between the clubs ongoing. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was also absent, while academy defender Ethan Sutherland was handed an opportunity.
Wolves hope Armstrong will be scoring regularly in the Championship next season. It was only his second goal for the club since arriving in January and he was unable to seriously threaten thereafter.
