Wolves’ upbeat week soured as head coach Rob Edwards was sacked on Thursday morning, leaving supporters across Wolverhampton surprised and disappointed.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the announcement ended a tenure that began in November last year. He took charge of 30 matches in all competitions, losing 16, and the club looks set to appoint Cesar Peixoto as his replacement.

Figures close to the club called the decision shocking and surprising, saying Edwards had helped bring in players such as Kieran Trippier and former striker Raul Jimenez.

Edwards left a Championship promotion push with Middlesbrough to succeed the sacked Vitor Pereira. A former Wolves defender, he made 100 appearances between 2004 and 2008 and later coached in the academy.

In Wolverhampton city centre many questioned the thinking behind the move. Dan Warren, 33, from Oxley, said he had expected Edwards to be given next season with relegation in mind and was concerned about the club’s long term direction after only six months with a squad he felt was not his.

He felt the decision undermined trust, arguing Edwards would not have left Middlesbrough without assurances, and that he had tried to get the best from players who knew they were moving on.

Others reacted differently. William Miles said he did not know why the club acted and believed Edwards lacked time and the right players, while Bill Agar, 62, from Pennfields, welcomed the change and called for Nuno or even Steve Bull.
