Jose Sa has been shortlisted for the Premier League goalkeeper performance of the season after his heroics at Nottingham Forest, an unexpected nod as the relegated Wolves keeper is widely tipped to leave this summer.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the public vote will be combined with an expert panel before the winner is announced next week.
Sa’s nomination recognises a goalless draw at Forest in which the hosts created 35 chances. He made 10 saves, including a superb goal-line stop to deny Morato.
The performance paved the way for his former manager Vitor Pereira to take the Forest job, with Sean Dyche dismissed after the stalemate.
Wolves were relegated last month after an eight-year stay and spent the entire season in the bottom three. They ended with back-to-back draws against Fulham and Burnley, when several players bade farewell at Turf Moor.
Sa has made 170 starts in five years since joining from Olympiakos.
His rivals for the award include Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Sunderland’s Robin Roefs, Burnley’s Martin Dubravka, Tottenham’s Vicario and Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez. Sanchez was recognised for six saves in Chelsea’s 2-1 home loss to Aston Villa.
Sa is expected to move on this summer, having been linked with Forest in January and with strong reports of interest from Besiktas. He remains under contract until next summer and no exit has been confirmed.
He said he would miss people at the club, noting that five years is a long time, and admitted playing while knowing relegation was coming was difficult. He stressed they had to give their maximum and look to the World Cup and next season for strength, and is now set to travel as a back-up in Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad.
