Wolves are staring at relegation, yet are already plotting a recovery, with “Premier League 27-28” the internal mantra and a target to be back by August 2027.

According to Telegraph, internal modelling puts survival at around one per cent, but a four-match unbeaten run under Rob Edwards and a 6-1 FA Cup win over Shrewsbury have lifted spirits.

After a £100m-plus summer when six signings arrived with zero Premier League appearances, while leavers totalled 877, the emphasis now is on proven Premier League experience. January plans centre on high-profile loans and genuine starters, with flexibility on exits, though persuading players will be difficult from bottom place, 14 points behind Nottingham Forest.

Recruitment is now aligned from scouts and analysts to Edwards and his staff, with Matt Jackson installed as sporting director and less reliance on Jorge Mendes. Rumoured moves for Ross Barkley and Kalvin Phillips are considered unlikely. Wolves also intend to stand firm on sales, with interest in Jorgen Strand Larsen, João Gomes and André, and no pressure to sell.

Teenager Mateus Mané has broken through and is contracted, having equalised in the 1-1 draw at Everton last week, and Wolves will resist approaches. Besiktas saw a £2m loan bid for Emmanuel Agbadou rejected. Marshall Munetsi is joining Paris FC on loan, and Fer Lopez is being offered to Championship clubs.

Relegation planning is advanced, with automatic wage cuts of 30-50 per cent and no release clauses, allowing Wolves to set fees. Performances have improved, including victory over West Ham United and draws at Manchester United and Everton, while Jhon Arias, Tolu Arokodare, Yerson Mosquera and Santiago Bueno have stepped up. Newcastle United visit this weekend, and Wolves need four more points to equal Derby County’s 11 in 2007-08.
