Joao Gomes is expected to undergo a medical on Friday as he moves closer to a £38 million transfer from Wolves to Aston Villa. He left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday to return to the UK.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, a deal has been agreed between the clubs, a fee that has frustrated some Wolves supporters who consider it low. Atletico Madrid had long led the chase for the Brazilian, but with their interest cooling, Villa have stepped in as they rebuild after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and losing Amadou Onana to long-term injury.

Gomes has made 130 appearances in all competitions since joining from Flamengo in 2023, and is viewed as the ideal cover for Onana’s absence. Villa’s midfield recruitment is set to continue.

They hope to complete the signing of 20-year-old Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg later on Friday, and are in talks with Bayern Munich over a possible loan for Joao Palhinha. Manzambi would become Villa’s record buy in a deal exceeding £50m.

Tielemans joined United earlier this week for £35m. Lucas Digne is on course to join Paris Saint-Germain once he returns from World Cup duty with France. Former Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan, now with AC Milan, is being targeted as his replacement.

Wolves are expected to be busy as the new season nears, with finding a replacement for Gomes a priority. Their summer arrivals so far are Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez and winger Rafiki Said.
