Wolves are moving towards appointing Cesar Peixoto as head coach after reports of an agreement in principle, a sharp turn in their Championship planning.

According to Molineux.news, Gestifute have overseen discussions with Jorge Mendes involved. He had been working in Spain to get Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid from Benfica, and is now expected to focus on Wolves’ move for Peixoto.

A Bola reported on Wednesday that Wolves had sounded out Peixoto as a replacement for Edwards, adding that advanced talks had been ongoing for several days. Peixoto is the Gil Vicente manager and led them to sixth place last season.

Later on Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Wolves had reached an agreement for Peixoto to take over, with a deal agreed in principle and a verbal agreement in place.

A Bola suggested Wolves view Peixoto as the ideal candidate to lead an immediate push back to the Premier League.

Any change would be unexpected given there had been little sign Wolves were ready to dismiss Edwards. Results after he replaced Vitor Pereira were unconvincing, and some supporters have doubts over his suitability.

Edwards has been outlining plans for the 2026/27 season in recent weeks. Despite that, it is now being suggested he could depart, and his response will be closely watched.

The prospect is surprising too because Andre praised Edwards when he signed his new deal, and Edwards was influential in the Trippier and Jimenez deals.
