It was a crazy and historical deadline day for WSL clubs, ahead of the start of the new campaign, with several big moves going through.

Here are the biggest transfer deals that took place…

Clinton made the surprising switch from United to Manchester rivals City.

The 22-year-old had just a year remaining on her contract at United and had not agreed a new deal.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me because of the love I have for my team-mates and for you, the fans,” Clinton said in a goodbye message posted on social media. “However, I feel the future of the club and I aren’t on the same page.

“For me personally, the next step is about growth. I want to continue to develop and learn.”

Going the other way, however, is Jess Park, who joins United from City.

“I wanted to break out of the boundaries and push myself to take on a new challenge,” she said. “I’m the sort of person who wants to keep improving and pushing limits, and I think this is the perfect place for me to do that.

“I’m a player who wants the ball, and when I get it I like to look up and try and make things happen for my team-mates, so I think I can fit in really well here. I know the ambitions are very high and I want to help the team push towards them.”

Grace Geyoro – PSG to London City Lionesses

Newly promoted London City Lionesses again signalled their intent not just to survive, but thrive, in the WSL this season by paying a women’s football transfer record £1.4m to sign Geyoro from PSG.

The fee beats the £1.1m Orlando Pride paid Tigres UANL to sign Mexico winger Lizbeth Ovalle last month, and the £1m Arsenal paid to sign Olivia Smith from Liverpool.

Geyoro, who has 103 caps for France, is the Lionesses’ 16th permanent signing this summer.

Lucia Corrales – Barcelona to London City Lionesses

Geyoro was not the only big money signing to arrive at London City on deadline day, with the club also splashing out around £430,000 to sign forward Corrales from Barcelona.

The 19-year-old said: “I chose London City because I believe it’s a club where a very good project is being developed, and I’m really eager to see how things are done here and to get started.”

Alyssa Thompson – Angel City to Chelsea

The 20-year-old winger has been capped 22 times by the USWNT and has signed a contract with the Blues until 2030.

Chelsea have reportedly spent a club record £1.1m on the youngster, who said: “Chelsea is such an amazing club, one of the best in the world.

“Being able to play with players that are the best in the world is an amazing opportunity at such a young age and I want to learn, grow and develop a lot. I feel like Chelsea is such an amazing environment to do that in.”

Lia Walti – Arsenal to Juventus

There were also some big departures from the WSL, however, with Switzerland captain and last season’s Champions League winner Lia Walti leaving Arsenal for Juventus.

“This is without any doubt one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to take in my life, to leave this football club,” Walti said. “Arsenal is so much more than just a football club for me, it became my home, my second family, my safe place, a place I always wanted to return to and all I have in my heart right now are just beautiful memories I will always keep with me.

“I think the most important thing for me is as well the friendships and the relationships I’ve created with the people because that means so much more than just playing football.

“It’s important that you leave your heart on the pitch and that’s what I tried every time I stepped on that pitch with that shirt. I think it’s funny when you create your home, your new family and your safe place, then you can’t obviously picture yourself somewhere else and I think that was really hard right now. Thank you to the fans, you made us feel unstoppable and thanks to everybody who supported me on that journey and thanks for everything, Arsenal.”

Risa Shimizu – Man City to Liverpool (loan)

The highly-rated Japanese defender will spend the season with Liverpool in the hope of securing more game time.

Alejandra Bernabe – Chelsea to Liverpool

The Spanish defender returns to the club on a permanent basis having spent the second half of last season on loan there.

Cathinka Tandberg – Hammarby to Spurs

The 21-year-old Norway international scored 19 goals in 37 appearances last season, including five times in the Champions League group stage.

Emilia Szymczak – Barcelona to Liverpool (loan)

A busy day for Liverpool with Poland midfielder Szymczak also arriving on loan for the season from Barcelona.

Beata Olsson – Kristianstads DFF to Liverpool

The 24-year-old striker also joins the Reds, having netted nine goals in 15 games already this term.
