Wonderkid confirms he is about to replace Kostas Tsimikas | OneFootball

An exciting wonderkid will replace Kostas Tsimikas this summer.

The Greek scouser has been a beloved character at Anfield over the years. Tsimikas is the best kind of player to have in a squad that is looking to compete on all fronts.

He may have never become a starter but during his six years at the club he has played a key role in Liverpool's successes. Whether under Jurgen Klopp or Arne Slot, Liverpool could not have had a better understudy to Andy Robertson as Tsimikas.

Arriving from Olympiakos, Tsimikas was able to step into Robertson's shoes in any situation. Both in the League Cup and the FA Cup, Tsimikas played a key role. Meanwhile, he was also a pretty solid player in the Premier League as well making well over 50 appearances for the Reds in the league.

Tsimikas' delivery and his tenacious defending has been the highlight of his game. But it's clear that Liverpool are now moving on from the Greek international.

Last summer's acquisition of Milos Kerkez confirmed that. Tsimikas was then ultimately loaned and didn't have a great time at AS Roma.

He struggled to get into the Italian side's squad and he's not caught the eye in pre-season under Andoni Iraola either.

At 30-years-old, Tsimikas is reaching the final years of his career. He will want to bow out on a high and it's also important to note that Liverpool probably can't afford to give one of their precious non-homegrown spots to a player who likely won't be playing an awful lot considering he is merely Kerkez's back-up.

That was fine when Tsimikas was in the prime of his career. But now Liverpool need a more astute back-up, someone who can push Kerkez and someone who can step-up and be recognised as the future of the club.

It's why even though there aren't a lot of rumours about his departure, it's pretty much guaranteed at this stage that Tsimikas is going to leave.

Liverpool need more additions in the squad and they need to free-up non-homegrown spaces, currently there are only two available spaces and that is before counting the addition of Bradley Barcola.

So while the Reds have been quiet about it, it's pretty obvious that Iraola has the perfect plan staring directly at him.

Because sure enough if Tsimikas leaves, he will need to be replaced. Just relying on Kerkez alone to play the left-back slot won't be enough.

Sure, Joe Gomez can also play there, but ask yourself, when was the last time he even started five consecutive games in a row? Gomez simply cannot be relied upon.

And therein lies Liverpool's problem. The lack of depth in defence isn't just at full-back, it's everywhere. Which is why Liverpool want versatile defenders.

And that is why Luke Chambers confirmed he is about to become Tsimikas' replacement with his performances in pre-season. Chambers is a club-trained player. He counts as homegrown and he can also play as a centre-back not just as a left-back.

He showcased that against Wrexham and Leeds United, even scoring against the latter. Chambers is clearly a very good defender and he's proven he can play at a high level.

At 22-years-old, given the fact that he is homegrown as well and Liverpool's need to have a defender capable of playing multiple roles, Chambers is the obvious choice to replace Tsimikas.
