Mauritania overpowered Togo with a 2-0 home win on Friday, September 5. This victory, secured on Matchday 7 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, marks the Mourabitounes' first success in this Group B campaign.
The Sparrowhawks see their qualification hopes slipping even further away. The Mauritanian technical staff’s men managed this crucial clash expertly, dominating a Togolese side desperate for points.
Papa Ndiaga Yade broke the deadlock in the 13th minute, giving his team an early lead that allowed them to control proceedings. Despite their best efforts, the Sparrowhawks couldn’t find an equalizer before halftime. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of Mauritania.
After the break, the game followed a similar pattern, with a disciplined and well-organized Mauritanian side. In the 68th minute, Aly Abeid doubled the lead with a goal that definitively sealed the outcome. This maiden victory brings Mauritania up to 5 points, but the Mourabitounes remain well off the pace set by Group B leaders. DR Congo and Senegal continue to battle for the top spots. Togo, meanwhile, stays on 4 points, and their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup are all but extinguished.
