Senegal has qualified for its fourth World Cup finals appearance after 2002, 2018 and 2022, having crushed Mauritania with an emphatic 4-0 victory.
Let's take a look back at the three appearances of the Lions of Teranga on football's grandest stage.
For their debut at a World Cup finals, Senegal caused a sensation by defeating reigning champions France (1-0). After two draws against Denmark (1-1) and Uruguay (3-3), they advanced to the Round of 16, where they overcame Sweden (2-1 after extra time). The journey of El Hadji Diouf and his teammates ended in the quarter-finals, falling to Turkey (0-1 after extra time).
The Lions of Teranga made their return to the World Cup 16 years later. This time, they couldn't progress past the group stage, finishing third with 4 points. After a victory over Poland (1-0), Sadio Mané and company were held to a draw by Japan (2-2) and then beaten by Colombia (0-1)—a costly defeat that ended their campaign.
On Qatari soil, Aliou Cissé's men defeated Qatar (3-1) and Ecuador (2-1) to reach the Round of 16, despite a loss to the Netherlands (0-2). Their run ended at the hands of England (0-3).
