World Cup bans player-coach talks when goalkeeper is down | OneFootball

IFAB confirmed on Sunday that, at the World Cup from 11 June to 19 July, players will be barred from speaking to their coaches when a goalkeeper is on the turf, and breaking the rule will not bring a yellow card.

The move targets a ploy in which goalkeepers stay down so team-mates can consult their coach.

The stance is that while a goalkeeper may legitimately be injured, outfield players must not leave the pitch to take an impromptu coaching break.

During such stoppages, players must remain where they are or gather in the centre circle.

A similar measure was adopted in the NWSL, the US women’s top flight, earlier this year.

In November last year, Leeds coach Daniel Farke condemned the tactic, accusing Gianluigi Donnarumma of using it to slow the tempo during a match against Manchester City.
