The discussions surrounding the German national team are gathering pace and now the 2014 world champion coach, Joachim Löw, is also getting involved. The former national coach is taking a clear stance on two Bayern stars who are currently in the spotlight
With a view to the upcoming World Cup, the distribution of roles within the DFB team is the main topic of conversation, with Joshua Kimmich at the center of it all
At FC Bayern, Kimmich is the undisputed fixture in central midfield, whereas in the national team he is deployed as a right-back – a decision that is a constant source of debate
For Löw, however, the situation is clear: „I believe that Joshua is currently playing at a world-class level in both positions,“ explained the 2014 world champion coach in an interview with Sport BILD
Nevertheless, he currently sees the Bayern star more on the right side of defence. The reason is less to do with Kimmich himself and more to do with the personnel situation in the DFB squad. While there are several top-level players available in midfield, there is a lack of alternatives at right-back
In doing so, Löw is indirectly strengthening the line of national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has already earmarked Kimmich as a right-back for the upcoming tournament

In addition to Kimmich, Löw also commented on Leon Goretzka – and clearly backed the midfielder, despite his changing role at FC Bayern. „Leon is good, he is a player from whom you can expect stability,“ Löw emphasized
Above all, the 31-year-old’s experience and reliability speak in his favor. Even if Goretzka is not a permanent fixture in Munich, Löw still sees him as a valuable option for the DFB team
This assessment is in line with Nagelsmann’s view, who continues to firmly plan for Goretzka despite reduced playing time
In the context of the current personnel situation, it also becomes clear how important alternatives are. The DFB team is currently missing the injured Aleksandar Pavlovic – an absence that is fuelling the discussion. Löw sees this as the crucial point: „Especially at Bayern, you need players who can be replaced on an equal footing.“
And it is precisely this role that he believes Goretzka can play – both at FC Bayern and in the national team.
