FC Bayern no longer has a World Cup champion in the tournament. Harry Kane and England suffered a dramatic defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semifinals—thus also bringing an end to an impressive record-breaking streak for the German record champions.

Harry Kane’s dream of a World Cup title has been dashed. The captain of the English national team lost the World Cup semifinal with the Three Lions 1–2 to defending champions Argentina.

For a long time, it looked as though England would advance to the final. Anthony Gordon gave Thomas Tuchel’s team a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute, fueling England’s hopes of reaching its first World Cup final since 2022.

But in the closing stages, the South Americans struck back ruthlessly. Enzo Fernández scored the equalizer in the 85th minute, before Lautaro Martínez headed in the much-celebrated winning goal in stoppage time, sending Argentina to the World Cup final.

A bitter end for Harry Kane

For Kane, this brings an end to a strong World Cup without the hoped-for climax. The Bayern striker was once again one of the tournament’s standout players thanks to his goals, but he was unable to prevent the late defeat against Argentina.

With Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano having already been eliminated with France in the semifinals against Spain, this means the last remaining Bayern player has now also been knocked out of the tournament.

FC Bayern’s record streak comes to an end

England’s semifinal exit also brought an end to an extraordinary streak for the German record champions.

Since the 1982 World Cup, at least one current FC Bayern player had been on the field in every World Cup final. For more than four decades, the record champions had thus been represented in the final without interruption.

Following the defeats of France and England in the semifinals, this impressive streak has now come to an end for the first time. No current Bayern player will be on the field in the final between Argentina and Spain.
