The last night of group stage action is upon us at the World Cup.

A far bulkier first phase at the inaugural expanded 48-team tournament in North America has brought goals, drama and talking points aplenty.

That was certainly the case again on Friday, as debutants Cape Verde pulled off another hard-fought draw with Saudi Arabia to secure second spot in Group H behind reigning European champions Spain, dumping out Uruguay and teeing up a showdown with holders Argentina in the round of 32.

Uruguay are arguably the biggest casualties of the entire group stage after crashing to a 1-0 loss to Spain that gives them no chance of progressing and will also surely spell the end of Marcelo Bielsa’s divisive managerial reign.

In Group G, Belgium bounced back from their slow start to demolish New Zealand 5-1 and secure top billing, while Iran had a late winning goal against Egypt ruled out for offside, leading to a nervous wait over their progression.

Earlier on, France’s attack starred once again as a heavily-rotated Norway team without the likes of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard were thrashed 4-1 in Group I, while Senegal’s 5-0 drubbing of 10-man Iraq saw Scotland’s hopes of progressing as one of the eight best third-placed nations plummet even further.

Saturday sees the conclusion of Group L, Group K and Group J. England are out to quickly banish memories of a frustrating goalless draw with Ghana as they face already eliminated Panama in New Jersey, heavy favourites for a victory that would see them top the group.

At the same time, Croatia and Ghana go head to head in a crunch clash in Philadelphia as both teams attempt to clinch their own qualification for the round of 32.

The action then moves on to a fascinating Group K decider between Colombia and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Miami, while DR Congo need to beat Uzbekistan in Atlanta to keep their tournament alive.

The group stage concludes in Group J, where Lionel Messi will start on the bench as holders Argentina - already guaranteed first place - prepare to ring the changes in Dallas against debutants in Jordan whose exit has already been confirmed.

Algeria and Austria also each hope to make the round of 32, with both teams on three points as they collide in Kansas City.
