Iberian sides dominate next day of World Cup knockout action
The World Cup round of 32 continues this evening as more sides look to book their place in the last 16.
Yesterday, England beat the Democratic Republic of Congo in dramatic fashion, with Harry Kane’s brace sparing the Three Lions’ blushes in a 2-1 win in Atlanta, Georgia.
That followed Mexico defeating Ecuador in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and Thomas Tuchel’s England will now face the co-hosts in a tricky last-16 clash at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
Late on, Belgium snatched a 3-2 victory over Senegal, with Youri Tielemans’ penalty in the dying embers of extra time to send Rudi Garcia’s Red Devils through, where they will take on the United States, who swept past Bosnia and Herzegovina with ease in Santa Clara, California.
Tonight, Spain kick off the action against Austria in Los Angeles, California, with the European champions in form after their victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group.
Luis de la Fuente’s side still are not at top gear, and they will need to be to defeat Ralf Rangnick’s men, who squeezed through in second place in Group J behind winners Argentina.
