World Cup: Marmoush's Egypt make Round of 16 but heartbreak for Semenyo and Ghana | OneFootball

Egypt claimed their first ever win in the World Cup knockout stage after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties.

Omar Marmoush started in Arlington at the Dallas Stadium as his side were forced to extra time as the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with no more goals coming in the additional 30.

Egypt took the lead when an unmarked Emam Ashour powered in Karim Hafez’s cross after 13 minutes.

Marmoush had the perfect opportunity to double Egypt’s lead within 10 seconds of the second half but he rolled a shot wide of the goal.

10 minutes later Egypt defender Mohamed Hany headed in Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick to give Australia hope and to the penalty spot it would be.

Harry Souttar fired the first spot-kick way over the bar while Lucas Herrington also missed his effort.

Defender Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive goal for the Pharaohs to win 4-2.

Elsewhere, Antoine Semenyo played the full 90 minutes for Ghana but the African nation were eliminated at the Round of 32 following a 1-0 loss to Colombia.

The South Americans took the lead on 14 minutes when Jhon Arias met a cross at the back post to coolly volley into the bottom corner - and his strike proved to be the decisive moment in Kansas.

Bayern Munich’s Luis Diaz thought he had doubled his nation’s lead in the second half, but he had strayed into an offside position before dispatching from close range.

But one goal proved to be enough for Colombia as they secured passage into the last-16 despite Semenyo and Co.’s best efforts to find a way back into the tie.
