Czechia coach Miroslav Koubek is now the oldest manager at a World Cup after the mark was surpassed twice on the opening day.

According to BuLi News, Otto Rehhagel’s previous best of 71, set with Greece in 2010, went first when South Africa boss Hugo Broos, 74, led his side against co-hosts Mexico. Hours later, Koubek extended the figure by 221 days in Czechia’s meeting with South Korea.

Both teams were beaten in their openers and will face each other on the second matchday next week.

Before then, the benchmark is expected to be broken again, with Dick Advocaat set to coach Curaçao against Germany on Sunday at the age of 78.

He guided Curaçao to a first World Cup, then resigned before reversing his decision last month. Argentine Juan José Tramutola remains the youngest coach, having reached the 1930 final at 27.
