World Cup pauses have often reshaped Brazilian seasons, and for Palmeiras they have tended to precede celebration. In 2026 Abel Ferreira’s side hit the break as outright leaders, aiming to convert control into another Brasileirão title.

In 2018, before the Russia pause, Palmeiras were sixth and chasing leaders Flamengo under Roger Machado. Luiz Felipe Scolari arrived in late July, tightened the defence and inspired a long unbeaten surge. The team took top spot and clinched the title with a game to spare, the 10th national crown.

In 2022 the picture was different. With the Qatar World Cup played in November and December, the Brasileirão had already ended, and Abel Ferreira’s side had dominated the campaign and sealed the title early, champions before Brazil departed for the tournament.

This year feels closer to 2018, though with a key twist, Palmeiras reached the pause already clear at the summit. After 18 rounds they have 41 points, seven ahead of Flamengo, and the league’s best record.

Seven players received World Cup call-ups with their national teams. During the break the staff prioritised recovery and prepared the group for the decisive run-in.

With half the season remaining, the task is to protect the cushion they built. If they sustain their level, Palmeiras would be well placed to claim a 13th Brasileirão and extend their positive World Cup-year trend.
