The 2026 World Cup has set a new single-day attendance mark, with 281,223 spectators in stadiums on Tuesday 16 June.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the tally surpassed the previous best of 277,070, recorded on 28 June 1994 in the United States, the last edition with 24 teams. He said the day would live in World Cup history and thanked supporters for the colour, atmosphere and emotion they bring.
Six days into the tournament, crowds have been strong. Organisers have counted a little over 1.3 million attendees so far.
The day featured 80,545 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, in the New York suburbs, for France's 3-1 win over Senegal. There were 69,045 for Argentina's 3-0 defeat of Algeria and 68,527 for Austria's 3-1 victory against Jordan.
Iraq's 4-1 win over Norway drew 63,106, the lowest crowd of the day. At this pace, 2026 could threaten the overall attendance record of 3.5 million, also set in 1994.
