Through their briefings released to journalists and transfer insiders, Chelsea have maintained all year that they are happy with the selection of goalkeepers already on their books.
But the stats tell a different story, and it’s hard to imagine our data-driven directors of football can look past such stark numbers.
There’s no doubt Robert Sanchez is the best option currently at the club, yet he’s made 5 errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season. That’s more than any other goalkeeper in the league. Could anyone possibly be planning for another year with the most error prone stopper in the division?
It’s not a freak outlier either – he’s also made a league-high 9 errors leading to shots. The numbers only back up what you see on the pitch – an erratic keeper who not only makes mistakes, but also spreads nerves through a young defence.

There are options of course – Filip Jorgensen will play tonight to rack up another Conference League appearance, but he’s convinced even less than Sanchez when given a chance.
Then there are the wild cards – Djordje Petrovic doing incredibly well on loan, and has just been nominated for Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year. The highly rated but highly inexperienced Mike Penders has just broken into the Genk team, and surely needs more time to develop before we think about bringing him in.
Our reading of this situation as it stands is that those in charge will stubbornly avoid signing a new goalkeeper in the summer – but will have to swallow their pride and admit their mistake on Petrovic, who will come in and compete with Sanchez for the number 1 shirt next season, while Penders and Jorgensen develop on loan.
