Leicester City are preparing for life in League One after a difficult campaign in which they suffered relegation.

The Foxes have been relegated in both of the previous two seasons, so will be looking to bounce back under new head coach Russell Martin.

The 40-year-old has previously worked in the third tier with MK Dons, and he enjoyed promotion success in the Championship with Southampton.

It could be a busy summer ahead at the King Power Stadium, as the club looks to build a team capable of a top two finish in 2026/27.

The League One side have yet to confirm any additions thus far, but it has been reported by The Telegraph that a deal for Danny Ings has been agreed.

The striker is currently a free agent following his departure from Sheffield United with the expiration of his contract.

When asked about the imminent signing of Ings, FLW’s Leicester fan pundit Jamie Preston has claimed that this will be a brilliant signing for the club, should it go through.

He believes that the Foxes have really been missing a quality striker, criticising both Patson Daka and Jordan Ayew for their efforts with the role in the past, and that the 33-year-old’s history of scoring consistently makes him a great addition.

“Wow, Danny Ings signing for Leicester City is actually brilliant,” Preston told Football League World.

“He’s had more clubs than Tiger Woods, he’s 33-years-old, but he knows where the back of the net is.

“He’s played for Liverpool, he’s played for Burnley, he’s played for Southampton, Villa, West Ham, Sheffield United.

“He’s played in the Premier League, in the Championship, what a signing that is to have for League One.

“Yes, he’s 33-years-old, but he knows where the back of the net is, unlike the last two strikers we have had in Patson Daka and Jordan Ayew.

“What a quality signing that will be, absolutely fantastic.

“Free agent as well, hasn’t cost us anything, just his wages, absolutely brilliant.”

Leicester will have until 1 September to complete any transfer business before the market shuts.

However, it remains to be seen what kind of spending power they have at the moment due to the financial issues they’ve faced in recent years.

The Foxes were docked six points last season for breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), which ultimately proved quite consequential to their season, as they finished five points clear of safety.

Danny Ings’ difficult Sheffield United season

Ings joined Sheffield United last year following his exit from West Ham, taking the step down to the Championship from the Premier League.

But he struggled for consistent minutes in Chris Wilder’s side, making 23 appearances in the second division, including only five starts, as the team finished 13th in the table.

Ings scored just twice, with the Blades coming 13 points adrift of the play-off places, which led to him departing at the end of his one-year contract.

Leicester will begin the new League One season with a trip to face Notts County on 15 August.

Danny Ings signing will bolster Leicester’s forward options

Given the season he’s just had, Leicester should perhaps not rely on Ings to be their main man leading the line every week.

However, the step down to League One could be what he needs to rediscover his best form, as it’s been a difficult few years for him.

The 33-year-old’s injury record also isn’t the most encouraging, giving the Foxes another reason why he can’t be their starting number nine next season.

But as a secondary option, he could prove a very useful addition, particularly given his experience of playing at the highest level.
