Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders was shocked when aware of his transfer value ahead of the forthcoming international break.
The 26-year-old has made a pleasant start to life in England after joining City from AC Milan in a deal worth £46.3 million (€57 million) – playing 18 games already this season and picking up six goal contributions.
Reijnders scored and assisted on his Premier League debut against Wolves in August and has since continued to adorn an initially worrying void that was left by club legend Kevin De Bruyne, who joined Napoli on a free transfer in June.
The Dutchman’s merited increase in transfer value to £61.6 million (€70 million) has surprised him; he is now the second highest valued player on the Netherlands national team behind Ryan Gravenberch – who is worth £66 million (€75 million) – according to Transfermarkt.
“Wow, that’s high,” Reijnders told Ziggo Sport, as quoted by Voetbal Primeur and relayed by Sport Witness.
“I occasionally check out former teammates on Transfermarkt to see how they’re doing. But I haven’t looked into my own situation.
“Last time I knew how much I was bought for, I was surprised. But it was a nice compliment from Transfermarkt.”
Yet having been called up to the Netherlands squad ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Poland and Lithuania, doubt has been cast upon whether Reijnders can play in a midfield trio alongside Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Liverpool’s Gravenberch.
In response to that debate, Reijnders has made it clear that he doesn’t agree with the viewpoint and thinks that all can work well together.
“We’re guys who like to have the ball at our feet, but that doesn’t mean we don’t complement each other,” the Dutchman said. “We all know what’s required in a match, and then we have to adapt accordingly.”
Reijnders made an emphatic start to life at the Etihad Stadium and after producing an all-time great Premier League debut against Wolves, the former AC Milan star is yet to kick on and replicate those heroics since.
Pep Guardiola decided to drop the playmaker in Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, though Reijnders impressed with two assists for Phil Foden against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League last week.
