Wrexham AFC have been urged not to entertain the thought of Josh Windass potentially returning to his former side, Glasgow Rangers, as well as reuniting with his ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss, Danny Rohl, in the upcoming January transfer window.

It has been an extremely mixed first four months of the season for the Red Dragons, who embarked on a first Championship-level campaign for 43 years in August after achieving the record-breaking feat of three successive promotions from the National League to the second tier, all under the management of the vastly-experienced Phil Parkinson.

Given the North Wales club's recent history, trajectory and ownership, as they remain under the financial guidance of Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, plenty of eyes have been cast on developments at the Stok Cae Ras as they hope to be the first owners to guide them to the Premier League, which would cap off a remarkable recent rise from the depths of non-league football.

Ever since the aforementioned American duo acquired the club for just £2m in 2021, a handful of players have remained long-standing and loyal servants to Wrexham, such as centre-back Max Cleworth, who has risen through the academy ranks before continuing to hold his own against opposition forwards, regardless of the constant step-up in class.

However, in order to give themselves a strong chance of achieving immediate success - relative to each level - the Red Dragons have also not been afraid to showcase their newfound financial wealth, with innovative ways of generating further revenue culminating in a club-record level of financial turnover in their most recent accounts.

Such financial power and the club's now-worldwide stature, helped by a Disney Plus docuseries, has helped Wrexham attract a higher calibre of player, which had to somewhat be the case as they returned to the Championship in order to swiftly become an established second tier side.

Yet, whilst the Welsh club enjoyed the highest net spend in the division in the summer after spending approximately £30m on 13 incomings, Windass' addition came at a relatively low cost in comparison to some of his colleagues, joining on a free transfer after leaving the aforementioned Owls after several instances of delayed wage payments under controversial former owner, Dejphon Chansiri.

Unsurprisingly, the 31-year-old has been a regular presence in Parkinson's side since, but perhaps hasn't fully showcased his well-documented playmaking ability.

Wrexham AFC urged to retain Josh Windass amid Rangers FC transfer talk

As previously mentioned, the Hull-born forward has become the subject of potential exit talk from North Wales, just five months after he joined the ambitious club after a sorry end to a lengthy spell at Hillsborough.

According to a recent report from Ben Jacobs of Give Me Sport, Windass has emerged as a transfer target for his former club, Rangers, who are gearing up for their first window under the management of Rohl, who was a colleague of the Wrexham man in the Steel City between October 2023 and June 2025.

The report, however, states that the Championship side have little intention of sanctioning an exit for the playmaker, which would come on a loan basis.

Reacting to such developments, Football League World's Wrexham fan pundit, Liam Grice, believes the Red Dragons are taking the right stance.

"I'd be very surprised if Wrexham let Windass go in January," Grice told FLW.

"Given we only signed him in the summer, we'd only let him go for a fee. We wouldn't want to do business where we're sending players like that out on loan, and Rangers probably wouldn't want to pay the fee we'd want for him.

"He's maybe not been as good as we thought he would be," Grice claimed.

"He's been good, but not like the game-changer a lot of us thought he would be. But, there's definite quality there, and he does show it from time to time.

"I can see why Wrexham fans are frustrated with him sometimes. But, he does have moments of quality.

"I think Wrexham would be silly to sell. I don't even think it's crossing the board's or the manager's minds to entertain an offer from Rangers, to be honest," our fan pundit claimed.

Josh Windass' previous Rangers, Danny Rohl history add intrigue to potential Wrexham saga

After agreeing to join Wrexham in July, Windass penned a three-year deal on an ESTIMATED base wage of £15,000 per week, meaning it would certainly be a surprise if he exited the club, even on a loan basis, so swiftly.

Given their struggles for consistency in the SPFL this term, it is no surprise that Rohl is immediately looking to make the Light Blues squad very much his own, which includes improvements in attack, as they have not been overly clinical thus far.

Windass has previously waxed lyrical about the former Bayern Munich coach, stating in January 2024 that "He's the best coach I've ever had by far and the way he sees football and explains it with Henrik (Pedersen) and the staff, I think they're unbelievable to be honest at what they do."

The forward was integral in Rohl's great escape in S6 in 2023/24, before scoring 13 times under him last term as the Owls finished 12th, and also has well-documented history at Ibrox, scoring 19 times and posting 13 assists in 73 appearances between 2016 and 2018.
