Wrexham director Shaun Harvey says the club walked away from a £19m January move for teenager Sidiki Cherif, judging it incompatible with Profit and Sustainability Rules and their longer-term plan.
"He was one that we looked at that was definitely going to be at the top end of the money that we had available. When I say available, I mean under the PSR limits, so you are limited," said Harvey, speaking on the Fearless in Devotion podcast.
"It doesn't matter how much money you've got, you can only lose so much in a three-year period," he added. "We had the money to spend, but the final analysis basically came down to that it didn't represent value in this particular transfer window."
Cherif later joined Fenerbahce in Türkiye for £22m, a fee that would have smashed the Championship record had Wrexham proceeded. Instead, they split a £5m budget across three additions as they pursue a third straight promotion.
January arrivals were Barnsley’s Davis Keillor-Dunn and Bristol City defender Zak Vyner, with Sheffield Wednesday striker Bailey Cadamarteri signed for £1m to bolster Phil Parkinson’s options.
"January is never going to be a big transfer window," Harvey said. "Phil [Parkinson] has made his name at the club by keeping a harmonious dressing room as far as is practically possible."
"The fact that we can't get away from is that we are sixth in the league. Whilst we want to strengthen, we definitely don't want to be upsetting the apple cart," he added.
