Wrexham are in talks with Rennes over a €5m deal for Wales international midfielder Jordan James.
Wrexham are interested in Rennes’ Jordan James, although they face competition for the midfielder from Parma and an unnamed Championship club.
The 21-year-old came through the ranks at Birmingham City, and he enjoyed a productive 2022/23 season, scoring eight times. However, Blues’ relegation meant a departure felt inevitable, and James secured a switch to Rennes.
His time in France hasn’t gone to plan so far, as James made 23 Ligue 1 appearances last season, many of which were from the bench.
Therefore, a return to the UK could be on the cards, as L’Equipe has revealed that Wrexham have started discussions with Rennes over a move for James.
They claim that a €5m deal could happen for the player, although Wrexham will face a battle to land the Welsh international, who has won 20 caps for his country.
That’s because the update explains how Serie A side Parma are also admirers of James, although they have tried to sign him on an initial loan, as opposed to the permanent transfer that Wrexham would be willing to do.
As well as that, the report adds that another Championship side is rivalling the Red Dragons for James’ signature, but it’s not clear as of now who that is.
It has been a difficult start to life in the Championship for Wrexham, with successive defeats to Southampton and West Brom meaning they are yet to get a point on the board.
Of course, it’s far too early to draw any real conclusions from that, but it does suggest the club could do with a few more quality additions ahead of the deadline - and a new midfielder would be welcome.
James would bring power, drive and energy to the middle of the park, and he fits the profile of the type of player that Wrexham should want considering he is still very young and has room to develop.
The fact he is proven in the Championship with Blues, and that he would add a goal threat, means James ticks plenty of boxes for the club, and he could instantly improve the XI.
For the rumoured €5m fee, this would be shrewd business by Wrexham, and continue what has been an aggressive window from the club.
Obviously, this deal won’t be straightforward given the interest in James, but the project at Wrexham will appeal, and it could be another statement signing if they can add James to Phil Parkinson’s squad.
