Wrexham savour Yankee Stadium occasion despite 1-0 defeat to Liverpool | OneFootball

Wrexham savoured a landmark night at Yankee Stadium, despite a 1-0 loss to Liverpool in front of co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac. According to NY Times, the Bronx setting felt special from the moment the club arrived.

Liverpool were on top early before Wrexham settled. The only goal came when Rio Ngumoha’s effort deflected over keeper Callum Burton. Kieffer Moore fired over late on from close range.

A crowd of 42,204 watched Liverpool’s third game at the ballpark, previous tours ending 2-2 against Manchester City in 2014 and Sporting CP in 2019. New head coach Andoni Iraola knows the venue from his New York City FC days, with half of his 40 appearances there.

Manager Phil Parkinson said the tour has been about creating unforgettable memories and called Yankee Stadium one of the most iconic. He felt the atmosphere and arena made it a night they will always remember.

The venue’s strong identity struck travelling fans, from tributes to past Yankees to a design by Populous, the firm behind Wrexham’s new £69.1 million Kop at the Racecourse Ground. The football layout can be tight and uneven in places, with narrow width and patchy turf, yet the setting still impressed.

This was another highlight in Wrexham’s Hollywood-era itinerary after stops at Levi’s Stadium, BC Place and Sydney’s Allianz. They have already beaten Manchester United this pre-season. Goalkeeper Danny Ward enjoyed seeing Wrexham shirts around Central Park, with many having watched the documentary, and Sunderland await in Philadelphia on Sunday before the squad fly home for the EFL kick-off.
