Wrexham and Ipswich Town ae two big spenders in the Championship as they try to reach the Premier League.

Wrexham and Ipswich Town were two of the bigger spenders in the Championship last summer, and they’re both in the mix for promotion as we approach the final months of the season.

That’s no surprise when it comes to the Tractor Boys, as Kieran McKenna’s men were relegated from the Premier League, and many of the squad are proven at this level.

Meanwhile, Wrexham’s rise up the leagues has been well-documented, and whilst their Hollywood owners have been willing to splash the cash, Phil Parkinson has done a brilliant job to put the Welsh side in with a shout of a fourth consecutive promotion.

Wrexham and Ipswich Town’s estimated wage bills

Even though the two clubs have spent a lot on transfer fees, there are many examples that show money doesn’t guarantee success in football.

Yet, it obviously helps, and another important factor in modern football is the wages you pay to ensure you can attract quality players.

We must stress that these are estimates, but Capology believes that Wrexham has an annual wage bill of just over £17.5m, which works out at £337,050 a week. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they estimate that Kieffer Moore is the top earner, with the striker said to be earning £30,000 a week.

Again, these figures are not definitive, but it would put Wrexham as the 12th-highest in the Championship.

Therefore, if Parkinson manages to secure a top six finish with the club this season, there would be a strong case to say he has overachieved.

As for Ipswich, Capology estimates that they have the fourth-highest wage bill in the Championship, spending just over £29.6m a week on salaries, which equates to £569,500 a week, with the highest paid player believed to be Dara O’Shea on £35,000 a week.

Even with the players taking a wage drop following relegation, Ipswich were always going to have a high wage bill, and some may have expected them to be the highest in the league.

Nevertheless, the salaries Ipswich pay means they are able to attract some of the best players in the league, with the club breaking the Championship transfer record to sign Sindre Walle Egeli in the summer.

So, that spending power has added to the expectation at Portman Road, and McKenna will be under pressure to take the club back to the top flight at the first attempt, with a top two finish still the goal this season.

Wrexham and Ipswich are clubs heading in the right direction

With Ipswich pushing for automatic promotion, and Wrexham trying to finish in the top six, the meeting at the Racecourse Ground is a big one.

Both clubs have benefited massively from their current owners arriving, and, in many ways, Ipswich are a club for Wrexham to try and emulate even if they started lower down the pyramid, as the Suffolk outfit defied the odds to reach the Premier League.

They now share the same ambition to reach the Premier League, and both clubs have been backed financially to achieve that goal.

With that in mind, it promises to be an exciting end to the season for both clubs, and every game is now important given the tight nature of the Championship at the top.
