Durham Women, a WSL 2 side, have appealed for investment and warned they could shut down within three weeks without fresh backing.

The club said in a statement that it is seeking investment or a complete sale after months of talks with potential backers fell away in recent weeks. It added that without new funding the team cannot operate in a fully compliant way for 2026/27. Staff and players have been told that unless a buyer or investor emerges within 21 days, operations would cease at all levels.

Durham finished 10th of 12 last season and share the division with Sunderland Women and Newcastle United.

Founded in 2007 from a single under-10 girls grassroots team, the club expanded quickly. Much of that progress came without backing from a men’s professional side, but the majority shareholders can no longer keep pace with the development of the women’s game. They are seeking new owners to build on that legacy and realise the club’s opportunities.

The Wildcats have twice reached the Women's FA Cup quarter-finals and the League Cup last eight on two occasions. Neil Redfearn took charge for the final six games of last season.
