Chelsea have announced that German international Sjoeke Nüsken has extended her contract with the club until the summer of 2027.
The 24-year-old midfielder joined the Blues from native Eintracht Frankfurt ahead of the 2023/24 Womne’s Super League season. Making her debut against Tottenham Hotspur on opening day, the German soon caught attention after bagging a first career hat-trick against Brighton in October 2023.
During her first season in West London, Nüsken made 38 appearances and proved herself a prominent goalscorer with a total of 12 scored throughout all competitions. Under Emma Hayes, the midfielder helped Chelsea on their way to the WSL title by scoring in Chelsea’s 6-0 dismantling of Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Under Sonia Bompastor, Nüsken has seen reduced minutes but shows her importance when given the chance to play. Still racking up 36 appearances, the German added a further five goals to her tally, and helped Chelsea on their way to winning an unprecedented domestic treble.
Speaking on her extension, Nüsken said: “I’m very happy to have another year at Chelsea, to stay another year with my team. We have a big year coming up, and hopefully, we can achieve the Champions League title. We want to achieve a lot of things together.”
Head of women’s football, Paul Green, added: “We’re really pleased that Sjoeke has renewed with Chelsea. She has been an important part of the success that we’ve had over the last couple of years, and we’re looking forward to seeing her contribute again in the current campaign.”
Internationally, the midfielder has risen through the rankings from representing German with their U17 side, to the senior squad. After making her senior debut in 2021, Nüsken has almost amassed 50 caps for her country, which has seen the midfielder feature at several major tournaments.
She travelled down under to represent Germany at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and also featured during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. There, Nüsken won a bronze medal after her side successfully beat Spain 1-0 in Lyon. The midfielder was also integral this summer during the Women’s Euros in Switzerland as Germany reached the semi-finals before being knocked out the runners-up Spain. Here, Nüsken scored two goals in her four appearances during the tournament.
Known for her versatility, the German placed 25th in last year’s Ballon d’Or rankings after an impressive first season in England. Chelsea will hope that the combative and athletic midfielder, who can play in both a defensive and box-to-box role, will continue to perform this season as the Blues chase their maiden European title.
