Xabi Alonso has been appointed Chelsea manager on a four-year contract, less than 24 hours after the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City. It marks a statement of intent from BlueCo.

The move was widely expected before the final, with The Athletic reporting shortly after full time that agreement was in place. Alonso led the search after last month’s dismissal of Liam Rosenior, with Andoni Iraola the only other serious contender.

He arrives after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023-24. A later stint at Real Madrid ended in under eight months, making clarity over Chelsea’s sporting structure central to talks. He sought and received assurances over his authority, and will start on one July.

Chelsea have given him the title of manager rather than head coach, signalling a bigger say on transfers and wider football decisions than any BlueCo-era predecessor. He will bring four staff from Madrid, while Calum McFarlane, goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts and set-piece coach Bernardo Cueva stay on.

During talks he set out an ambition to build what he called mentality monsters, addressing issues with discipline, resilience and adversity. The club aim to add at least two high-profile signings this summer, prioritising character as well as ability.

Tactically, his preferred three-four-two-one offers continuity. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro are seen as strong fits, while questions remain over the wingers. Dressing-room reaction has been positive, and with two Premier League games left against Tottenham and Sunderland, focus is on a pivotal summer.
