Xabi Alonso refused to discuss Chelsea’s collapsed pursuit of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka when asked about the midfielder.

According to Sunderland Echo, Chelsea explored a deal for the Switzerland international, with Xhaka attracted by the prospect of reuniting with Alonso after their successful time together at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland maintained throughout that their skipper was not for sale, rejecting attempts to negotiate. Xhaka only joined from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17 million and is viewed as central to Régis Le Bris’ squad ahead of a European return.

Xhaka was initially open to talks but later reaffirmed his commitment after discussions with the club. The chance to captain Sunderland in Europe, and the longer-term project, were key to his decision to remain at the Stadium of Light.

Alonso’s response offered no further detail. He said: “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.”

Sunderland consider the matter closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
