Liverpool’s uncertain end to the season has naturally sparked discussion about the future of Arne Slot. During a recent episode of Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Dave Davis and journalist Lewis Steele explored the subject of potential managerial successors, with one familiar name inevitably entering the conversation, Xabi Alonso.
However, Steele suggested that while Liverpool supporters may dream about the Spaniard returning to Anfield, the reality of the situation could point in another direction entirely.
As Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League after the draw with Tottenham, questions about Arne Slot’s future have become a growing talking point. Dave Davis raised the issue directly during the podcast, noting that supporters and commentators are already discussing possible replacements.
“You obviously work in the media, the industry, you’re in the football industry, and people are talking about who could replace Arne Slot,” Davis said. “That’s a natural thing that’s understandably going around, whether people like it or not.”
Among the names repeatedly mentioned is former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. Davis pointed out that Alonso remains a popular suggestion whenever the topic arises.
“People keep mentioning Xabi Alonso,” he said, reflecting the widespread fan interest in the idea of the Spaniard eventually managing Liverpool.
Lewis Steele responded by outlining why Liverpool might not be the club best placed to secure Alonso’s services.
“There’s a sort of understanding that Pep’s leaving in two months,” Steele explained when discussing the managerial situation at Manchester City.
That potential departure could create a major opportunity for Alonso elsewhere before Liverpool even have clarity over Slot’s position.
“If you’re Xabi Alonso and City have already been in your ear, say, for three months, would he maybe get sold on their project before Liverpool even come to the table?”

Steele suggested that timing could be decisive. Liverpool cannot realistically approach a new manager until Arne Slot’s future becomes clear, which could allow Manchester City to gain an advantage.
“They can’t really go and negotiate with him before we even know what Slot’s future is,” Steele said during the discussion.
The Media Matters conversation also highlighted how few elite managerial candidates are realistically available if Liverpool were to make a change.
“There’s not many names out there that are truly elite level coaches,” Steele explained.
Although other names have been mentioned, the options may be complicated by timing and availability. Steele referenced one prominent candidate currently unavailable.
“A lot mention Nagelsmann, but he’s at the World Cup. I don’t think that one works out for anyone this summer in terms of when he’d be available.”
That uncertainty means Alonso remains a logical name in discussions, particularly given his Liverpool history and reputation within the game.
Still, Steele cautioned against viewing him as a guaranteed solution.
“I don’t think he’s the saviour, so to speak, but I think he’d certainly be top of everyone’s list in terms of the fans.”
Despite the speculation, the immediate focus remains on Liverpool’s results and Arne Slot’s ability to steady the team during the final months of the season.
Steele emphasised that the upcoming fixtures could define the club’s direction.
“A lot does depend on this next three games,” he said.
The discussion on Media Matters reflected the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool right now. Arne Slot remains in charge, yet conversations about the future are growing louder.
Whether Liverpool continue with Slot or eventually look elsewhere, the managerial landscape across Europe may play a decisive role. As Steele suggested during the podcast, if Xabi Alonso does move this summer, there is every chance that the path could lead to Manchester City rather than back to Anfield.
