Xabier Mancisidor and Juan Manuel Lillo have joined Rafa Márquez as part of Mexico’s new backroom team, with the project initially set to run to 2030. Both coaches were without a club and now link up as he begins his tenure.

The Mexican federation said in a statement that, after a 2026 World Cup which exceeded expectations and strengthened the bond with supporters, it was confirming the staff Márquez has assembled to lead the national team.

Lillo, with more than 40 years in game analysis, will serve as one of Márquez’s assistants on tactical and technical matters. Mancisidor, after 13 seasons as Manchester City’s goalkeeping specialist, will take charge of El Tri’s keepers.

Mexico were knocked out by England in the round of 16 at the last World Cup. Change now follows, with the ‘Kaiser’ replacing Javier Aguirre after serving as his assistant at the tournament.

They will be joined by Vidal Paloma, Andrés Guardado and Pol Lorente as part of the set-up.

At the tournament, Imanol Ibarrondo led mental training and leadership, and Joseba Ituarte worked as goalkeeping coach. Ibarrondo previously featured during Juan Carlos Osorio’s tenure and has collaborated with Real Sociedad since 2018.
