Yangel Herrera is closing in on a return for Real Sociedad, but a resurgent midfield leaves Pellegrino Matarazzo with a selection puzzle before Sunday’s Basque derby.
According to as.com, only Iñaki Rupérez and Take Kubo remain in the treatment room after Óskarsson and Herrera rejoined training in recent days. The Venezuelan, the standout signing last summer, has endured injuries that restricted him to two appearances, and after several full sessions he could be named in the squad.
Turrientes and Gorrotxategi have seized their chance, and Carlos Soler was a regular until his red card against Barcelona ruled him out of the Celta match. Brais Méndez has kept his place, while Luka Sucic is featuring more often, giving Matarazzo plenty of options.
In limited minutes this season, Herrera still forced a dismissal and a penalty, underlining his power and late runs into the box, qualities few team-mates share. His line-breaking and authority are seen as assets to add muscle and experience to a side beginning to dream of European contention.
It is a welcome dilemma for the American coach at a decisive stage of the campaign. Competition has intensified, and Herrera’s return would strengthen rotation in the middle. Sunday will show whether Matarazzo introduces him gradually or sticks with the in-form core.
