Yannick Bright may be the key to unlocking Inter Miami's attack, his rise from unheralded draft pick to midfield fulcrum has sharpened the team’s balance.

According to interheron.com, the New Hampshire product has become indispensable, enabling Rodrigo De Paul to push on while he shields in the opposition half. In Wednesday’s 5-3 win in Cincinnati, he earned his first MLS Team of the Matchday selection this season, his third in three campaigns.

Interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos views Bright as the side’s defensive and attacking balance, and says he can slot between the two centre-backs to form a back three. He considers Bright young with a very bright future, learning alongside the club’s biggest names, presumably Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, and former team-mates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

Bright ranks in the 97th percentile among MLS midfielders for defensive actions in 2026. He received an 8.3 rating against Cincinnati, his second 8-plus of the campaign, and is averaging 7.3 after 12 matches.

His market value has risen from zero on entering the league in 2024 to about $1.5 million. Inter Miami extended his deal late last season through 2028 with an option for 2029, lifting his base salary from $80,622 to $385,000.

Born in Milan on 3 September 2001 to an Ivorian father and Italian mother, he played for Alcione, Seguro and Arconatese before moving to the University of New Hampshire in 2020, where he earned academic and athletic honours.

“I think what’s nice about my story is that I'm just a normal guy. I came to the U.S. just to study. And then through hard work and resilience, I made it. So, if I did it, I think anybody can,” he told USA Today.

Inter Miami are 7-2-4 with 25 points, second in the Eastern Conference. The Herons host Portland Timbers, 4-6-2 with 14 points, on Sunday, still seeking a first win at Nu Stadium, their $350 million new home. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET.
