AS Saint-Étienne have appointed Yannick Chandioux as head coach of their women’s first team. The deal runs to the end of the season with an optional extra year, and was confirmed on Friday as the club fight to stay in Arkema Première Ligue.

The club said in a statement that Chandioux, 50, takes over after his February dismissal by Montpellier. Saint-Étienne are 17th, second-bottom, in Arkema Première Ligue.

He becomes their third coach this season. Sébastien Joseph was dismissed on 11 February after insulting a referee following the 0-4 defeat at Lyon, then assistant Tom Bouvier stepped in with limited success.

Chandioux previously led Dijon from 2017 to 2021, then Montpellier until February 2026. Montpellier are bottom, level on points with Saint-Étienne.

With five matches left, the task is a major challenge for coach and team alike. His experience and knowledge of the French top flight are seen as qualities that could keep Saint-Étienne up. He regards the assignment as motivating and is convinced the group can steady themselves and complete the survival mission.
