Yeremy Pino is Crystal Palace’s first World Cup winner, it could be his springboard under Sage | OneFootball

Yeremy Pino has become Crystal Palace’s first World Cup winner after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s final.

According to NY Times, his first season in England was demanding, yet he ends it with two trophies, having also played in Palace’s 1-0 Conference League final win over Rayo Vallecano in May when his free kick hit both posts.

The 23-year-old featured twice in the tournament for a total of 69 minutes and had scored in the 2-0 qualifier against Georgia in October. An injury in Spain’s final group game against Uruguay was initially feared to be a broken collarbone, but it was a sprained left shoulder. He recovered for the latter stages, although Luis de la Fuente did not use him.

He is due back at Palace in around a fortnight. Last season he started 39 of 51 games after a £21.5 million move from Villarreal, returning five goals and five assists. Daichi Kamada’s trajectory a year earlier offers hope Pino could follow a similar path.

In March, Oliver Glasner noted Pino had played more minutes than Kamada, acknowledged a dip in confidence, and urged him to relax, praising his finishing in training.

Pierre Sage now takes charge and wants players to show for the ball, win it back quickly, and for attacking midfielders to play wider and release it early. Less direct than Glasner’s approach, his style may suit Pino, who will miss Como Cup games against Lens and Famalicao but should be available to face Freiburg on 15 August.

Palace sent 12 players to the World Cup and will now welcome back a champion. The hierarchy value Pino’s risk-taking and different profile, and there is faith he could have a stronger impact next season. His World Cup triumph and European success with Palace might be the springboard under Sage.
