Manchester United are set to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in the next few hours.
The two clubs have reached a broad agreement for £25.2 million plus £4.2m in add-ons.
The Serie A side initially wanted £33.6m to sanction his exit.
Dorgu is travelling to Manchester today to undergo his medical test.
When asked by reporters if he is excited to join United, he replied (via Sky Sports): “Yes, it is a great opportunity for me.”
Dorgu remained as an unused substitute in Lecce’s 3-1 victory over Parma on Friday.
Manager Ruben Amorim fields his team in a 3-4-2-1 formation, which heavily relies on the dynamic role of wing-backs.
Signing wing-backs was a priority for United as they entered the January transfer window.
Dorgu, a left-footed player capable of excelling on either flank, is expected to be slotted directly into the left wing-back position by Amorim.
Diogo Dalot has played in the left wing-back role this season, but he is naturally more suited to the opposite flank.
The injury histories of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia make the duo unreliable.
Standing at 6ft 2in, the Denmark international would provide United with added height to strengthen their defence on set-pieces.
The 20-year-old has played in at least five different positions for Lecce this campaign.
He is a good dribbler and is capable of beating a man.
His presence could provide the attacking spark from wide areas that has been lacking at the club.
However, there are big question marks over his defending skills.
The Premier League is the most intense league in the world and Dorgu would take some time to adapt.
