Yoann Damet’s rise has taken him from Burgundy’s amateur game to MLS, where he became SC Saint-Louis manager in December on a three-year deal. The 36-year-old moved to North America 13 years ago.

Raised in Burgundy after being born in Marseille, he downplays comparisons with Pierre Sage. According to Le Progres, Canadian Olivier Prud’Homme invited him to Canada, where Montreal life and a highly professional amateur scene convinced him to push on.

A visa lapse first derailed him, as he was turned back from a CF Montréal internship and barred for a year. The club later interviewed him remotely and helped cut the ban, enabling his 2013 arrival.

In Montreal he juggled pre-academy, scouting, conditioning and coaching, working long hours with youth. Early 2017 took him to FC Cincinnati under Alan Koch, helping build culture and structure as the young club stepped up to MLS.

He spent five years there, took interim spells, learned new methods and communication, and worked with Jaap Stam. Dismissed in 2021 after a US Open Cup semi-final run, he wondered if he had proved enough.

He then assisted a United States Under-20 camp, led LA Galaxy’s reserves before joining the MLS staff six months later, then linked up with Wilfried Nancy at Columbus, winning silverware including the 2023 title.

After a decade’s apprenticeship, December brought the Saint-Louis post. He says he wants to do things properly, feels results pressure while the club is still being built, and views it as another step, aware of the sacrifices.
