With Sheffield United expected to operate on a tighter budget this summer, the loan market could prove to be one of the club’s most valuable recruitment tools as Chris Wilder looks to reshape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Blades are known to be in the market for a left-winger, and rather than spending significant transfer fees, a move for one of the Premier League’s brightest young talents could offer excellent value. Sheffield United have enjoyed success with loan signings in the past, and this summer may present another opportunity to unearth a player capable of making an immediate impact in the mould of a James McAtee or Morgan Gibbs-White.

Is Lewis Dobbin the Attacking Option the Blades Need?

One name that could fit the bill is Everton winger Lewis Dobbin. The 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell in Lancashire last season, registering nine goals and eight assists while establishing himself as one of the most exciting young attacking players outside the Premier League. Those numbers alone would attract interest, but it is Dobbin’s playing style that may make him particularly appealing to Wilder.

For several seasons, Sheffield United have struggled to find genuine pace and directness in wide areas. Dobbin offers both in abundance. Blessed with explosive acceleration, he thrives in transition and has the ability to turn defensive situations into attacking opportunities within seconds. His willingness to run at defenders gives him a quality that few players currently in the squad possess.

Comfortable operating from the left-hand side, Dobbin is at his best when isolated against a full-back. Averaging over 1.1 successful dribbles per game during his loan spell, he consistently looks to create opportunities through individual quality rather than simply recycling possession. Whether driving towards goal himself or creating openings for teammates arriving in the penalty area, he provides a level of unpredictability that Sheffield United have lacked at times.

His contribution is not limited to attacking phases either. One of the most impressive aspects of Dobbin’s game is his work ethic. The winger presses aggressively from the front, tracks runners diligently and contributes defensively, averaging around 3.5 ball recoveries per match. That blend of attacking flair and defensive commitment is exactly the type of profile Wilder has often favoured throughout his managerial career.

Blades Current Attacking Depth

Of course, Sheffield United are not short of promising attacking options already.

Ryan Oné has emerged as one of the club’s brightest prospects after playing a key role in Lincoln City’s promotion to the Championship. The young forward scored five goals in just 15 appearances and demonstrated his versatility by operating both through the middle and from the left wing.

Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford has proven to be a shrewd addition since arriving in late 2025. The experienced striker contributed 12 goals in 27 appearances and brought a level of leadership and composure to the attack that had previously been missing.

Then, of course, we have Tom Cannon and Tyrese Campbell. Both of which have struggled for consistent form, though Campbell has shown more glimpses of quality.

Could Sheffield United Sign Moore?

Another intriguing possibility could be Tottenham Hotspur wonderkid Mikey Moore. The 18-year-old is regarded as one of English football’s brightest young talents and enjoyed an excellent loan spell at Rangers during the 2025/26 season. Moore scored seven goals and provided three assists in 33 Scottish Premiership appearances, demonstrating that he is more than capable of handling senior football.

While Moore and Dobbin can both operate from the left, they offer contrasting qualities. Dobbin’s game is built around raw pace, direct running and stretching defences. Moore, meanwhile, is more technical and creative, preferring to drift inside into central areas where he can combine with teammates and influence play between the lines.

However, because Moore made that good of an impression at Ibrox last term, the Glasgow club could come calling for his services once more.

The situation surrounding Gustavo Hamer could ultimately influence which direction Sheffield United choose to take. The Dutchman has often occupied the left-sided attacking role despite naturally being more suited to central areas at previous clubs. However, with only 12 months remaining on his contract, speculation regarding his future continues to grow.

Should United decide to cash in on one of their most valuable assets, the funds generated could help facilitate an ambitious loan move for a player of Dobbin’s or Moore’s calibre, albeit on a temporary basis.
