Experienced Belgian set to seal move north in coming days
Youri Tielemans is set to undergo his Manchester United medical within the next 24 hours as Michael Carrick continues his midfield overhaul.
The surprise news of United’s interest in the Aston Villa man broke on Monday morning, and the club are wasting little time in sealing the deal.
Standard Sport understands the deal is at an advanced stage, with reports elsewhere suggesting United triggered the player’s £35million release clause.
And Carrick is moving quickly to get the transfer over the line, with Fabrizio Romano now reporting the 29-year-old is already en route to Manchester to undergo routine medical exams. He is expected to get the ball rolling on those tests on Tuesday before signing a long-term contract.
He stands to become United’s second midfield signing of the summer after the £50m purchase of Chelsea’s Andrey Santos.

United were efficient in signing Santos, too, after their move for Atalanta’s Ederson fell through at the late stages, after a £37m package had already been agreed.
Tielemans’ exit will likely force Aston Villa into the transfer market, particularly after his Belgium team-mate suffered an ACL rupture at the World Cup.
Tielemans was among Belgium’s top performers at the tournament, where they were knocked out by Spain in the quarter-finals.
He scored twice in five appearances, both against Senegal in the last-32, also impressing throughout the group stage and against the United States in the last-16.
With 579 career appearances to his name at club level, his signing will add considerable experience to United’s squad following the departure of the veteran Casemiro.
