Zamalek book Confederation Cup quarter-final spot with Kaizer Chiefs win

Zamalek qualified for CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals after 2-1 home win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Zamalek finish top of the group

Zamalek secured their place in CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals with 2-1 victory against Kaizer Chiefs in final round of the group stage.

The match played at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium and marked the sixth and last fixture in the group. With the win Zamalek finished top of the group with 11 point confirming direct qualification to the knockout phase.

Goals decide the match

After balanced first half, Zamalek broke the deadlock in the 53 minute through Brazilian forward Juan Bezerra who found the net to put the hosts ahead.

The Egyptian side strengthened their lead in the 72 minute when veteran midfielder Abdallah El Said scored the second goal giving Zamalek control of the game.

Kaizer Chiefs reacted quickly as Makabi Lilepo pulled one back three minute later but the visitors were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle.

Group standings confirm qualification

Zamalek’s victory ensured they finished first while Al Masry claimed second qualifying spot with 10 point after beating ZESCO United 2-0 in the other group match.

ZESCO United & Kaizer Chiefs were both eliminated from the competition at the group stage ending their continental campaigns.
