According to a report from L’Équipe, Steven Nzonzi (37) has agreed a contract with Ligue 2 side USL Dunkerque. The length of the contract has not yet been disclosed, with the midfielder a free agent following the expiration of his deal at Stoke City this summer.
Nzonzi made thirty appearances for Stoke in the Championship last season, and a further appearance off the bench in the FA Cup defeat to Fulham FC (2-1). However, at 37, the Frenchman’s contract was not extended, and he was allowed to depart on a free transfer.
Instead of remaining in England, the 2018 World Cup winner is set for a surprise return to his home country. The last time Nzonzi represented a French club was while he was on loan from AS Roma at Stade Rennais in the 2020-2021 season.
Nzonzi has some experience playing in the second tier of French football, but that was between 2008 and 2009, back when he first started out as a professional at Amiens SC.
