With England, Thomas Tuchel is preparing to attempt something no national team coach has ever done before.
Recently, Thomas Tuchel made headlines by discussing an unprecedented measure for the national team. The former PSG manager wants to keep his substitutes in the dressing room during the 2026 World Cup. Facing the threat of extreme heat forecasted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the new England boss is seriously considering not placing his bench at pitchside when temperatures exceed dangerous thresholds.
Speaking to the BBC, the German coach admitted he is weighing up this option to keep his players fresh and maximize their impact off the bench. "If it can help us perform better at the end of matches, we have to consider it. Nobody likes it—I prefer to have everyone by my side so the players can feel the group's energy, but I've already seen teams do it at the Club World Cup. I hope we won’t have to go that far, but maybe we’ll need to adapt."
"You can’t play the same football at 45 degrees as you do at 21 degrees."
