The midfield pivot was one of the most problematic areas for FC Barcelona at the start of this season. The only natural pivot in the squad, Oriol Romeu, had left the club to join Girona in the last summer transfer window, and Frenkie de Jong, another player who can play well in this position, was also out with an injury.
Furthermore, the Blaugranes were also unable to bring any new reinforcements because of their financial problems. In such a context, Hansi Flick decided to bet on homegrown talent, as he made Marc Bernal a regular starter. However, the youngster also suffered a serious injury from which he is still recovering.
It was then that Marc Casado got his opportunity to play regularly with the first team, and the young midfielder took full advantage of the situation to make himself a starter for Hansi Flick for most of the season.
His importance in the team declined only when Frenkie de Jong returned to his best level after the start of this year, and to make things worse, he also suffered a right knee ligament injury on March 16th, while playing against Atletico Madrid.
At the time of this injury, the midfielder reportedly aimed to return to action for the last part of the season. Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, this is still Casado’s plan as his recovery has been going quite positively, and he has already started to step onto the pitch.
The Barcelona midfielder is clear that he will not take any risks by returning early. However, if his recovery continues at the pace at which it has been going up to now, he will be aiming to return for the last two games in La Liga, against Villarreal and Athletic Club, and also for the final of the UEFA Champions League.
However, for the latter game, the Blaugranes will have to beat Inter Milan in the semi-finals first, and Casado will be cheering his teammates from the sidelines to help them get over this barrier.
