FC Barcelona lost Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets in quick succession. The three club veterans had been an instrumental part of the club’s past decade and their exits left gaping holes to different extents.
The biggest and arguably the most difficult one to turn around at that point was Busquets. Barcelona didn’t have a natural pivot succession to the Spaniard and Xavi made the decision to bring former La Masia graduate Oriol Romeu from Girona.
However, after a bright start, the player struggled to handle the intensity of playing for Barcelona and just one season after, once Hansi Flick came in, he decided to let the player leave on loan, yet again back to Girona.

Now, as per SPORT, Girona have announced their goodbyes to a few of their players at the end of the season and that list included Romeu. What this means is that the 33-year-old forgotten man is set to come back to Barcelona.
While this does not necessarily mean that the 33-year-old is not wanted by Michel’s side, it means that at this point, there is no agreement to make it happen. However, Romeu doesn’t have a future at Barcelona and is set to leave sooner, rather than later.
Oriol has been a regular feature for Michel’s team this season, albeit not always as a starter. He has played 31 games across all competitions. The veteran midfielder could look to reach another agreement to move back to his former club.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be looking to identify a solution to move on from the veteran midfielder. With just a year to go on his deal, the Catalan club might choose to terminate his contract to let him decide where he wants to move next.
Romeu’s return to Girona was a short-term solution that didn’t fully reignite his form, and with no long-term future at Barcelona, an exit now appears inevitable. While the signing may be remembered as a low-risk gamble that didn’t quite pay off, Barça will now aim to part ways amicably. As the 33-year-old explores his next move, the club will look to turn the page, once and for all.
