The Sun’s Chelsea insider piece this week suggests the Blues may have their eyes on one of tonight’s opposition stars as Benfica come to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League.

Red hot striker could be on Blues’ list

“Chelsea fans may have their eyes on is striker Vangelis Pavlidis,” their piece reads.

“The Greek forward, 26, was the club’s top scorer last season and looks in fine form having scored twice against Gil Vicente on Friday night. Chelsea have not been afraid to be linked with a number of strikers under their American owners and Pavlidis is no exception,” they continue.

There was talk of interest over the summer but Benfica were holding out for an eye-watering £85million – which made any move unlikely. Given the constant Chelsea churn it would be no surprise if another striker was needed in the next couple of years, meaning a good performance tonight could see Pavlidis on that list when the time comes.”

He should have a great chance to impress tonight against a cobbled together Chelsea defence.

Pavlidis doesn’t fit Chelsea transfer profile

We’re not sure we see a future where Pavlidis moves to Chelsea. For one, he’s too old. By next summer he will be 27, way too old for the Blues to sign except perhaps on a free transfer – by which time he will be in his 30s.

The new model is only to sign players with resale value and upside – and Pavlidis, for all his qualities, doesn’t offer that.

We’re also just not sure how good he is. Anyone can tear up the Portuguese league playing up front for one of the big 3. He’s hardly putting up Viktor Gyokeres numbers over there either.

We hope these aren’t famous last words ahead of tonight’s game…
