Prior to the forward bidding farewell to his boyhood club in August 2023, Manchester United had set their sights on a deal for longstanding target Harry Kane.

Ultimately, the prolific striker opted to ply his trade in the Bundesliga, leaving England for the first time in his career after establishing himself as one of the real greats of the modern game.

Kane became Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer in February 2023 before knocking Wayne Rooney off of the top spot of the Three Lions’ esteemed rankings only a month later. He did, however, depart the Premier League before he was able to equal Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals, signing off with just 47 goals separating the two frontmen.

Alas, it came as no surprise to anyone to see that Kane’s world-class clinicality had him transition seamlessly into Bayern’s setup, and he has since taken Germany by storm; in only 72 appearances across all competitions, he notched an unfathomable 70 goals and 22 assists.

United could finally act on Kane interest with achievable release clause

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils retain their interest in Kane – they certainly would if they knew what was good for them, that’s for sure. By all means, put your faith in the fact that Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee will eventually come good, but transfer chiefs can surely accept that the pair are nowhere near the level required to provide enough firepower up front.

In the event United reignited their pursuit, Kane, now 31, won’t be as pricey as he used to be. Bayern forked out £100 million to prise the Spurs talisman from Daniel Levy’s grasp but reportedly included a release clause in his terms that’s now dropping with each passing window.

According to Sport BILD (relayed by talkSPORT), the England skipper was available for £67m over the last month, with the fee poised to drop to £54m this time next year.

The report states: “Kane has a release clause in his Bayern Munich contract, which has dropped significantly in recent days

“Clubs have the power to activate a release clause in his Bayern contract if they desire, according to Sport Bild, hinting that a return to the Premier League could be a possibility.”
