Sandy McMahon scored twice

ONE – SATURDAY 9th APRIL 1892 – “Our Bhoys Have The Cup!” is the cry throughout the east end of Glasgow. Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the first time by beating Queen’s Park 5-1 at Ibrox. Johnny Campbell and Sandy McMahon score two goals each and there is an own goal as well in front of about 26,000 – considerably fewer than there had been a month earlier when the game had to be declared a friendly because of repeated crowd encroachment.

Peter Johnstone scored

TWO – SATURDAY 9th APRIL 1910 – While most attention was being paid to the Scottish Cup final being played at Ibrox (Clyde and Dundee drew 2-2) Celtic took another two points in their quest for their sixth League title in a row. They did this by beating Aberdeen 2-0 with goals from Jimmy Quinn and the fast improving Fifer called Peter Johnstone who now seems to have displaced Peter Somers at inside left.

THREE – MONDAY 9th APRIL 1962 – Rangers were lucky to escape tonight with a 1-1 draw from the mud of Celtic Park, but this result will yet be significant in the destination of the Scottish League Championship as earlier in the day Dundee had beaten Dundee United at Tannadice Park 2-1. Tonight John Hughes scored for Celtic and Celtic really should have put another three or four away, but Rangers equalised late in the game. As a result of this, Rangers and Dundee are now equal on points, although Rangers have a better goal average.

FOUR – SATURDAY 9th APRIL 1988 – An epic Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden as Celtic beat Hearts 2-1 with two late goals from Mark McGhee and Andy Walker. 65,886 are there to see a great comeback with Celtic looking down and out with about ten minutes to go. But “this team doesn’t know how to lose” says Manager Billy McNeill as the possibility of a League and Cup double appears on the horizon.

FIVE – SATURDAY 9th APRIL 1994 – The revolution may have happened about a month ago, but it is clear that there will have to be quite a lot of changes on the playing side, for form continues to be dismal. Today 18,000 see a miserable 2-2 draw against Hearts at Parkhead with Rudi Vata and John Collins scoring the goals. It is now clear that this will be one of the last games that we will see at the “old” Parkhead before long overdue redevelopment takes place.
